Essential Information about Backtracker Rail Passes
- All Pass rates are valid for the purchase date shown.
- All Passes are for travel in Economy Seats / Red Kangaroo Daynighter Seats and are valid for 6 months
- National passes are only available to international visitors and should be purchased before arrival into Australia.
- Payment for all Passes can be made and a voucher will be issued for passes not held - this should be exchanged at a major rail station in the relevant state within Australia.
- Upgrading is permitted (additional surcharges apply)
- A travel day is a period of 24 hours or less, from the scheduled departure time of a service eg. An overnight trip 2100/0900 is recorded as one day.
- All rates listed are subject to change without notice
- Pre booking as early as possible is recommended to ensure that maximum value is obtained from the Pass - many trains are extremely popular all year round. Great Southern Railway requires pre booking for all trains at least 24 hours prior to travel.
- Full travel conditions are detailed on each pass.
- Backtracker Rail Passes are valid for 14 days, one, three and six months from the first date of travel. An overnight journey is permitted on the last day of validation, providing that the total journey is completed the following day
- Backtracker Rail Passes are available for unlimited journeys on the entire CountryLink rail and coach network.
Backtracker Rail Pass Vouchers
The Backtracker Rail Pass contains four additional pages in the back of the ticket containing four vouchers for free travel as specified:
City to Katoomba
A one-way CityRail ticket from any city station, which includes Central, Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St. James, Museum, Martin Place and Kings Cross to Katoomba station.
Katoomba to City
A one-way CityRail ticket from Katoomba to any city station, which includes Central, Town Hall, Wynyard, Circular Quay, St. James, Museum, Martin Place and Kings Cross to Katoomba station.
DayTripper
An all-in-one day ticket that gives unlimited travel on all CityRail trains within the suburban area (bounded by Cowan, Emu Plains, Richmond, Carlingford, Macarther, Cronulla, Otford, and Bondi Junction stations); unlimited travel on all Sydney Buses and unlimited on all Sydney ferries. Excursions are Sydney Explorer Bus, Bondi Explorer Bus, Airport Express, Sydney Ferries Haboursights cruises and the Manly Jetcat.
Bondi Beach return
Return CityRail travel from the City to Bondi Junction station and bus transfer to and from Bondi Beach on Sydney Buses numbered 380 and L82. PLEASE NOTE that the return journey must be made by 4am the following day.
City Rail Travel
To travel on CityRail trains the owner of the pass must present their Backtracker Pass at any major CityRail ticket office for verification. The designated voucher is then removed from the pass and exchanged for each journey. /Journeys on these vouchers can't be pre-booked and must be exchanged on the day of travel.
The vouchers can't be redeemed for cash or credit.
Once the exchange has taken place there is no refund.
There is no replacement or refund if the vouchers are lost or stolen.
The first day of travel for the CountryLink passes must commence 6 months from the date of purchase.
Passes are only available to overseas travellers and visitors in possession of a current international passport with a valid visa, with the following exception: Australian residents can purchase East Coast Discovery Passes for travel between Sydney and Cairns, Melbourne and Cairns and Brisbane and Cairns in either direction. A passport is not required.
Passes are not transferable and may only be used by the person whose name is on the pass.
Passes must be made available on request to authorised persons when travelling.
There is no refund or replacement of passes that have been validated, lost or stolen or passes that are invalid or expired. In all other case an application for refund must be submitted to the office of issue within six months of the date of purchase.
Any reservation not cancelled before departure of a booked sector/service will render that sector/service invalid for future travel. /Any unused portion of a pass will expire six months from the date of purchase.
Coordinated travel on CountryLink and CityRail services is only allowed when travelling in conjunction with a connecting CountryLink service.
Travel on a CountryLink Pass is available for economy seats, but can be upgraded to first seating or first class sleeper. The upgrade value will be the difference in the fare between the economy ordinary fare and upgrade fare plus any ancillary charges.
Reservations are compulsory. One passenger only can travel per pass.
Passes are not available for travel until validated.
Passes not validated must be submitted for refund to the office of issue within six month from the date of purchase.
Adults fare only apply to the purchase of CountryLink Passes. No concessions or discounts permitted.
Normal luggage allowances and reservation restrictions apply.
Ticket validation
The Backtracker Rail Pass must be validated on the commencing day of travel at any CountryLink ticket sales outlet. If you are joining a service at an unattended location, the Pass will be checked and validated by on-train staff or coach captains.
Refunds and Ticket/Pass Changes
There is no refund on partially used, lost or stolen Passes. We strongly recommend that your travel insurance protects you against loss or theft of your rail pass
If the Pass is returned for cancellation or alteration before the first date of travel listed on the Pass, then we have a standard 15% cancellation/alteration fee in addition to an administrative charge per ticket, in all cases. Cancellations and alterations can only be made when we receive the pass/ticket prior to the first date of travel.
